The Reality of a Broken Leg: The Road to Recovery
For many seniors, a serious leg injury isn’t just about healing or getting back to their normal routine — it’s ultimately about maintaining independence.
Beyond the physical pain, recovering from a tibia/fibula fracture presents unique challenges:
- Mobility Limitations: Being non-weight-bearing for weeks means relying on crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair.
- Home Adjustments: Navigating stairs, bathrooms, and daily tasks becomes more difficult.
- Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy: Strength and flexibility need to be rebuilt gradually.
- Risk of Re-Injury: Rushing recovery can lead to complications, setbacks, or future falls.
- Emotional Frustration: Loss of independence can be mentally and emotionally draining.
For Emily, staying still wasn’t an option. She needed a plan that allowed her to recover while staying as active and engaged as possible.
How our Aging Life Care Managers® Can Help
A leg injury may be temporary, but a strong recovery plan can prevent long-term complications. An Aging Life Care Manager®, or Geriatric Care Manager, helps bridge the gap between medical treatment and real-life recovery.
For Emily and Ben, our care team provided:
- ✅ Home Safety Modifications: Arranging grab bars, a temporary wheelchair ramp, and a downstairs setup for daily living.
- ✅ Mobility Assistance Planning: Coordinating transportation for medical appointments and errands.
- ✅ Physical Therapy & Recovery Oversight: Ensuring Emily followed her rehab plan without overexerting herself.
- ✅ Daily Living Adjustments: Connecting Emily with short-term in-home help for cooking, cleaning, and personal care.
- ✅ Emotional Support & Encouragement: Helping her stay positive and engaged with safe, modified activities.
With a structured recovery plan and professional support, Emily could heal without feeling like she had lost her independence completely.

Emily’s Journey After a Serious Leg Injury
We are going to be sharing the story of how Emily navigated her recovery from a broken leg with the help of an Aging Life Care Manager®. Check back next month to read the next step of Emily’s journey to recovery!
At 72, Emily was the picture of an active senior. She hiked every weekend, played doubles tennis with friends, and never missed her morning walks. Staying active had always been her way of feeling strong, independent, and young.
Then, one afternoon on the tennis court, a sudden misstep changed everything.
As she lunged for a backhand, Emily lost her balance and felt a sharp crack in her leg as she hit the ground. The pain was immediate and excruciating. Her friend rushed to her side, and soon, she was in an ambulance on her way to the ER.
The X-rays confirmed a severe break in both her tibia and fibula. She needed surgery, followed by weeks of non-weight-bearing recovery and months of rehabilitation.
“I can’t just sit around all day,” she told her son, Ben, as frustration welled up. “How am I supposed to do anything?”
Ben was equally concerned. Emily lived alone and was fiercely independent. How would she get around? Who would help with daily tasks? How would they make sure she didn’t push herself too soon?
That’s when the orthopedic nurse suggested working with an Aging Life Care Manager® — someone who could guide Emily through her recovery and help ensure she regained her mobility safely.
