In honor of Aging Life Care Month, here are our answers to five common questions about Aging Life Care Managers®.
1. Do Aging Life Care Managers® override family caregivers?
Our role as care managers includes supporting family caregivers! We provide resources, education, and respite care services for family caregivers, helping them be the best caregivers they can be while maintaining their own mental and physical health.
2. How does an Aging Life Care Manager® help people make decisions on care?
Our advice on the best care solutions comes from our experience of working with other seniors, an extensive knowledge of local resources, and our discussions with clients regarding their wishes for care. While we offer our professional opinions on what the best decision for care would be, decisions are ultimately left to the client or the person who holds the power of attorney. We do not force you to choose our recommended services, nor will we arrange services without your consent. Our goal for our clients is to provide them with the least restrictive living environment possible while ensuring they remain safe.
3. But the hospital and my insurance have case managers we can use, why should we use an Aging Life Care Manager®?
Case managers and care managers have similar names but different focuses. Case managers focus on short-term, immediate needs that surround hospital visits. Care managers provide ongoing, personalized care that addresses long-term needs from a holistic viewpoint.
4. Can an Aging Life Care Manager® help prevent my loved one from being scammed?
Part of our work is keeping seniors safe from scams and elder abuse. Drawing from our years of experience, we are skilled at spotting situations where older adults may be vulnerable to scams or manipulation. Our care managers help put protective measures in place, educate families on common risks, and step in quickly if something seems off, helping to prevent small concerns from becoming serious problems.
5. How do I know if I need an Aging Life Care Manager®?
Aging brings many changes, making it difficult to know which are normal signs of aging and which are signs of decline that need to be addressed. Here are a few questions to ask to see if an Aging Life Care Manager® might be right for you:
- Can my loved one be left alone for extended periods of time?
- Can they take care of their basic needs, such as bathing, dressing, feeding?
- Are they able to remember to take medications as prescribed?
- Will they let strangers into their home?
- Will they know what to do in the event of a fire or another emergency situation?
- If they fall are they able to get the help that they need?
- Can they prepare their own meals?
- Do they wander away from familiar surroundings?
